Success at the PAGB

By News No Comments

We submitted entries in both the Nature Cup as well as the Small Clubs Cup. This was judged over the weekend of the 20th January 2018. The Nature Cup allows us to submit a maximum of 21 images which a maximum of 3 per author, and the Small Clubs Cup a maximum of 10 images with 4 authors and a maximum of 4 per author. Well we did quite well. In the Nature category we’ve up’ed our game from sharing 23rd to 20th in our own right!, but that’s not all! In the Small Clubs we’ve leapt from 39th to 8th and only a couple of points for making it into the top 5 in the country. So well done all and to those who provided images, please keep on up’ing our game.

Dave Boam with Gonzo Photography at the Twinwood Vintage Festival

By News No Comments

Dave has had a news article printed about his recent trip to the Twinwood Vintage Festival, well done Dave. Here’s an article from Dave on his trip.

Twinwood is massive….vintage dress, music, dance, everything really, over a long hot bank holiday weekend. As one of the musicians I have normally restricted my photographic exploits to the stage. This year, feeling somewhat inspired by the Dougie Wallace approach I spent most of my time snapping the audience. Using a wide angle lens and daylight flash I get in close and take the picture before the subject even knows I’m there. I also took some posed shots because they weren’t likely to refuse when dressed to the nines. Using daylight flash really makes the subject pop and it’s well worth learning how to master. Vintage Life Magazine had a stall at the festival but no photographer so they showed a fair bit of interest in my images…..though I was pleasantly surprised when they took eleven of them to publish. Next year I’m going to try to bag a gig as official “festival candid photographer”. The music business ain’t what it used to be and I’ve got my Hunter S Thompson-inspired-washed-out-banana-republic-journalist look all sorted out.

Robertshaw Trophy – 12th October 2017

This coming Thursday is the Robertshaw Trophy which is our first external competition. This year it is being hosted by Crewe Photographic Society (http://www.crewephotosoc.com/) and being held at Crewe Vagrants Sports Club. The address is Newcastle Road, Willaston, Nantwich, CW5 7EP. The start time is 7:30pm and it will take about an hour to get there from Macclesfield.

The competition is between Crewe, Blythe Bridge, Holmes Chapel, Leek and Macclesfield and is being judged by Bob Dennis. It would be good if we could get a number of people to go to support the club. If you’re interested please let me know: kevin_blake_macc_cc@btinternet.com and we’ll try and work out the logistics. If you need any further details please let me know.

Brian Lloyd Duckett

Another thoroughly entertaining and absorbing evening at the club last night with Brian Lloyd Duckett taking us through his approach to Street Photography. Lots of sound sensible advice and sharing of Brian’s knowledge and experience. For further details about Brian, his workshops and courses take at look at his web site: http://streetsnappers.com/. We’re hoping to try and arrange a workshop later in the year so if you’re interested please let us know. If you would like to look at more of Brian’s corporate work see: https://www.lloydduckett.com>.

To all those who came last night, thank you also for letting Brian know how much you enjoyed his talk. For those who didn’t manage to pick up Brian’s book it is worth a read: Mastering Street Photography which is available on Amazon and presumably other good book venders.

Our New Season Kicks Off!

By News No Comments

Our season kicked off at Macclesfield Library on Monday evening (11th September). It was wonderful to see so many familiar faces and so good to see lots of new ones. You’re all very welcome. Thank you all for coming.

The evening kicked off with the aims of the club and the programme for the upcoming season. It’s going to be a busy season so hopefully there’s lot for everyone to get involved with and enjoy, so thanks to Val and Vince and their minions for pulling this together. If you didn’t pick up your programme last night it is available on the web site where a PDF version can be downloaded, but there will be printed copies available on Monday evenings.

Vince took us through our new camera challenge. So it’s back to basics for a bit of fun. So no mega-lenses, no auto-focus, no image stabilisation, but the possibilities for plenty of imagination and fun! So find some friends, pick up your camera and get creative. The challenge is up and running, so the first group, your time is ticking and your camera should be clicking, well, up to your allotted 6 clicks!

Dave Boam then took us through part of his on-going photographic journey, lots of wonderful images and great to see the Dave’s being so successful with his images. It’s an inspiration for the rest of us, so thanks Dave for sharing it was very enjoyable, keep going!

Martian Expeditionary Force
So once again, thank you all for coming, for those who couldn’t make it last night, we hope to see you soon, but let the season commence!
