Macclesfield Regain the High Peak Trophy

Macclesfield Camera Club have regained the High Peak Trophy which they last won in 2017. The High Peak Trophy is a local photography competition run annually between 4 clubs: Macclesfield Camera Club, Stalybridge Photographic Club, Chapel Camera Club and Bramhall Photographic Society.

The High Peak Trophy is a team competition which is normally run over two rounds, the first usually being the Printed Images round followed by the Digital Projected Image (DPI) round. There are 8 entries per club in each round with a maximum of 2 entries per photographer per club. This year, because of Covid restrictions the competition was run on line, with each of the clubs submitting 16 digital images with a maximum of 3 images per photographer. All of the entries were scored out 20, the club with the highest cumulative score after both rounds winning.

The result wasn’t certain until the very end as, because of the high quality of the field, the judge held back over a third of the images for a “second look”. In the end Macclesfield came out winners by 11 points with a magnificent score of 303 points (from a possible maximum of 320). In addition Steve Gresty’s image of two fighting White Tailed Eagles was judged to be the best image in the competition. All 3 of the images submitted by Steve and by David Tolliday received maximum scores of 20 points – a fantastic and very unusual achievement.

Annual Exhibition 2019

Our 2019 Annual Exhibition kicked off last night with the official opening at Macclesfield Library. In total we had 43 prints and 91 PDIs. This was lower than last season in terms of the number of prints and a little lower in the number of PDI’s, but we had a similar number of authors entering. However the standard of the entries was as high as ever so well done everyone who won and well done to all those who entered. A big thank you to Alan Towse our judge for his expert judging on the evening.

PAGB 2019

The PAGB Cup was judged over the weekend of the 19th January. The images are scored out of 15, by 3 judges who see the images for about 5 seconds.

The GB Cup for Small Clubs

Congratulations to Anthony for being awarded a bronze medal for his image ‘Out of Bounds’, Best Long Exposure Image. In the PAGB GB Cup – Small Clubs we tied for 10th (out of 56) with Dunsten and Mosley clubs. Once again a very creditable result.

The GB Cup for Nature

Congratulations to Steve Gresty for a perfect score of 15 marks for his image ‘White Tailed Eagle Confrontation’. In the PAGB GB Cup – Nature we tied a very creditable 25th (out of 86) with Edinburgh, Cannock, Dundee and Southampton and we were only a couple of points behind North Cheshire and knocking on the door of some of the biggest clubs in the PAGB.

[Non-]Disposable Camera Challenge

Following on from last season’s disposable challenge we decided to up the ante this season with a non-disposable camera challenge but still holding back from using modern cameras. Instead Vince kindly lent us some of his film cameras from the 80’s. So the same rules applied, it’s all about getting the image right in the camera. Having learnt about horizons, sticking your thumps over the lens, etc., it was time to use cameras with a little bit more control, aperture setting, distance setting etc. There was a choice of cameras available. This season we had the choice of shooting up to 6 film images, but still not being able to see the outcome until all the film had been processed.

There were some technology issues on some of the cameras but we still had a healthy set of images to review and vote on. So the winners are in gallery below… enjoy, remember this is 80’s technology!

High Peak Trophy – 2018 – Silver Lining for Macclesfield

We were defending the High Peak trophy at Stalybridge last night (26th November) which was being judged by Christine Widdal (http://christinewiddall.co.uk/). This is an annual competition contested between Macclesfield Camera Club, Chapel Camera Club, Bramhall Photographic Society and Stalybridge Photographic Club. It was a well contested competition with 8 PDI’s and 8 prints from each of the clubs with a maximum of two entries per photographers per club.

At the end of the first round (PDI Images) Macclesfield held a slight lead over Chapel. We managed to get 3 images held back with eventually 2 top scores of 20 points for David Tolliday’s Bearded Reedling with Nest Material and Paul Scott’s Solitude both gaining the top mark and Steve Gresty’s Coyote in the Snow scoring 19. Chemical Beach By Anthony Gosling scoring 17, Flow by Dave Boam 17, Riga National Library by Vince Sparks, 14, Wet Rocks by Kevin Blake 14 and Zig Zag by Val Lear 17.

The second round of judging saw Chapel have 5 of their prints held back reflecting the quality of their entry, so they were able to sneak past Macclesfield and pip us at the post by 3 points. Macclesfield had one image held back which was one of only 3 images to score top marks in the print round and this was David Tolliday’s Red Fox with 20 points. Barn Owl in Winter Meadow by Steve Gresty scoring 17, Shield Maiden by Irene Lea 16, Still Afloat by Paul Scott 17, Hotel Cannobio 4 Stars By Kevin Blake 16, Sweep by Dave Boam 17, Grace by Anthony Gosling 18 and Derwentwater by Denis Jones 17.
